Australia continues to experience high population growth. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australia’s growth rate has almost doubled in recent years. Victoria is well on its way to becoming a state of more than 8 million people.
Population growth of this magnitude will be a difficult task to manage. It poses challenges and opportunities for maintaining Victoria’s liveability.
In response to the challenges of accommodating our growing population, Regional Cities Victoria commissioned a report to investigate the future infrastructure and resource investment required from all levels of government in the state’s 10 largest regional cities.
Through this investigation it was revealed that even with the current population projections Victoria’s regional cities still have the capacity to accommodate an increased share of the state’s growing population.
Improved infrastructure and resources will be required to support growth in the regional cities, however we believe this investment can be improved to encourage additional growth in our cities.
An outcome of this kind will relieve Melbourne of some of the pressures and costs associated with a growing population over the coming decades.
